The Erie Saxophone Quartet
The Erie Saxophone Quartet
The Erie Saxophone Quartet was formed in 2006 with a specific goal: promoting and preserving the saxophone as a voice in classical chamber music. Following the vision of its inventor, Adophe Sax (1814-1894), the Erie Quartet strives to utilize the many tonal colors and the extreme flexibility of the saxophone through interpretation of new music and transcriptions.
In 2007, the quartet began to find international recognition among composers. The Erie Quartet's repertoire now boasts over a dozen works written expressly for the ensemble.
The Erie Saxophone Quartet has appeared at a wide vary of venues including community festivals, nursing homes, concert halls, colleges, public schools, churches, and even street corners! Some of these performances include the North American Saxophone Alliance Regional Conference (Penn State University), the Cardinal Saxophone Workshop (University of Louisville), Kresge Recital Hall (Carnegie Mellon University), Rosch Recital Hall (SUNY Fredonia) and the Lilac Festival (Rochester, NY.) The Erie Saxophone Quartet has also been featured on public radio several times including WXXI’s award winning program Backstage Pass (Rochester, NY), WRFA (Jamestown, NY), and WCVF (Fredonia, NY.)
The Erie Saxophone Quartet became the first chamber ensemble to both compete and win at the State University of New York at Fredonia Annual Concerto Competition in 2008.
The Erie Saxophone Quartet performs exclusively on vintage Buescher saxophones. These instruments were built with specific consideration to the original acoustic design by the inventor, Adolphe Sax. The result is a warm, rich, full sound with flexibility and an ability to blend throughout the voices.
